ABOUT ME

McKenna Owens

I am a student at North Carolina State University studying for a B.A. in Communication Media and a B.A. in Art Studies with a concentration in film, hoping to graduate from undergrad in 2022.

What will I do with those degrees? Well, I have multiple dream jobs which include, but are not limited to: Cinematographer for National Geographic, Film Director, Screenwriter, Documentarist, Nature Documentarist, Featured Player on Saturday Night Live, Head Writer for Saturday Night Live, Production Assistant, Artistic Director, Animator, Visual Effects Supervisor, Camera Operator, Editor, etc.

I am extremely hard-working and open to any opportunity that comes my way, whether it slaps me in the face or is sent to my email. I love film, animation, animals, nature, and I have a strange obsession with Beluga whales and Antarctica (a place where there are no Beluga whales). I am the epitome of a Hufflepuff, a Scorpio if you care, and according to Myers-Briggs, an INFP personality. I like to read classic novels (yawn, I know) and Shakespeare plays (bigger yawn), which makes sense because Shakespeare is also an INFP personality. I have had three different hair colors throughout my lifetime which are blonde (my natural color), red, and brown, and I cycle through them periodically depending on how I feel.

Lastly, the most important piece of information about myself: my favorite color is green.

Born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina, from a young age McKenna always had a passion for the creative arts.

At age eight, she became involved in musical theatre at the local community theater, which led to being the teacher's assistant during her senior year for her high school theatre teacher. She wrote three one-act plays for her high school theatre class, one of which she had the opportunity to direct, and she directed a published play as well.

When she was nine, she began filming her trainset from various angles, editing the footage together in Windows Movie Maker circa 2008, creating a short narrative movie. Her AP Government class in her junior year of high school required a video project as the final grade that could be about any topic as long as it related to politics, serious or not. Of course, she chose the latter, making a video entitled "21 Trump Street", which she wrote the story for, shot, and edited, while also appearing in a few scenes herself. Unfortunately, she was ill the day the video project was presented to her teacher, so her (now ex-) boyfriend who was in her project group got all of the credit. How dare he. She swore to herself that was the last time she'd let anyone take credit for her work.

She has played almost every sport known to mankind: soccer, softball, basketball, volleyball, swimming, competitive swimming, cheerleading, competitive cheerleading, lacrosse, and field hockey, for which she started the team for her junior year of high school. She fell in love when she went to college. His name? Rock climbing. Through rock climbing, she found her current place of employment at the U.S. National Whitewater Center as a Land Sports Guide. Though she longs to travel the world and experience the great outdoors, as every millennial does...
